STYLE:
My approach to the creative process of filmmaking.
Generally while working on a film set at any capacity it is my belief that everyone should be considered equal in regard to their value on set. Ownership of a credit on a film project gives that individual bragging rights and in turn ownership over the film. Every film belongs to those who bring it to life. It is the director's film as well as the PA's.
Having said that, it is also my belief that good ideas are not exclusive to any one party. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and any crew member may have a solution that fits any given need; technical or creative.
As a director it is my job to focus these efforts whether they are from the talent or the crew so that the film has a single cohesive course. This is especially important when considering creative input associated with the "vision" of the film.
Aesthetically I take an intuitive approach to the source material. I allow the facts presented within the script to shape the look of the film. It is important that the narrative information be conveyed through Mise-en-scène. Anything that is not addressed through the source material needs to be filled in organically with creative decisions that support the facts presented in the script.
From a technical perspective I prefer to work in close before covering action in order to preserve the actors performances. I also believe that it is necessary to storyboard all complex action sequences and shots in order to achieve common understanding among all working components. Even so, basic coverage plans should be laid out for each scene. It is in the pre-visualization process where all details can be addressed and dealt with.
Having a strong background working with actors in theater and film, my style is tailored to provide talent with the support and direction they need to find their most powerful performance. In order to discover that performance it is important for me to make sure that stress brought about by technical concerns does not affect the actors. Preparation is key so that the least amount of time need be spent on such matters.
It is important for me to be the buffer that protects the actors from being aware of these concerns so that they may remain in the moment and give honest performances. It is my observation that great performances are caught on film when such a delicate environment is created for the actors on set.
